Sensei Toohey began his martial arts journey at the age of 17. Through years of dedication and discipline, he earned black belts in both Shuri-Ryu and Shorin-Ryu karate. Drawing from the strengths of these two traditional styles—the precision and power of Shuri-Ryu combined with the fluidity and grace of Shorin-Ryu—he developed the Shuri-Rin style, a harmonious balance of strength, form, and flow.
Over his decades of teaching, Sensei Toohey has guided and trained multiple state and world champions, instilling in his students not only the physical techniques of karate—blocks, punches, and kicks—but also the deeper principles of heart and mind. His approach goes beyond the dojo floor, emphasizing the development of character, respect, and connection between the student and the art itself.
Sensei Toohey continues to uphold the karate creed in every lesson, preserving the traditions and spirit of the martial heritage he represents.
